| We Welcome you Welcome to the Hayes Township Schuetzen Verein web site. Over the years we will be developing this site into a source to view pictures of our current year event and past events. This will also be a location to learn more of what our organization is about, our history and maybe your German heritage. Please send in your comments, pictures, old stories and anything else you think people would like to know. The Schuetzen Verein tradition dates back hundreds of years in Germany. The purpose of a Schuetzen Verein was to promote a sense of unity in the community, remember those who are not with us anymore and test the skills of men and women. Traditionally, these events last for many days with lots food, German ale and sports. Today, the tradition is carried on in West Side Iowa. Over the years minor changes to tradition has occurred. There is not as much lederhosen worn but there is still plenty of beer, food and competition on our one day of celebration. This is our 120th year of celebration and we are proud to keep it going but every year it gets harder and harder to open the doors. With a steady decline of revenue from memberships, gatherings held at the Five House and fund raisers, every year could be our last. Our number one priority is to keep this tradition alive for our children so they can enjoy the King Shoot as we have for so many years. The only way this tradition will continue is from help from everyone. I ask that you please be generous with donations, buy tickets to our annual steak dinner, arrange to have your gathering at the Five House (weddings, reunions or graduations) and volunteer any skill you possess to the Verein to help keep the building in good condition. I will soon have a list of names and numbers of people you can call. We appreciate any assistance you can provide. Now after all that doom and gloom lets have some fun, share some of our memories and have a beer together. Please check back every once in a while and see what we have changed and enjoy our site. Sincerely,
